Iran is stopping the leak of its nuclear secrets

April 27, 2004

Brigitte Quinn: Iran right now is trying to stop the leak of its nuclear secrets. The countryís Revolutionary Guards overseeing over 400 nuclear experts based in Tehran. The move is raising some questions about Iranís suspected nuclear weapons program. The man who broke the news is talking with us right this morning from the DC Bureau, Fox News foreign affairs analyst, Alireza Jafarzadeh, who is also the former US representative of the National Council of Resistance of Iran.

Thank you very much for being here.

Alireza Jafarzadeh: Thank you Brigitte, welcome back.

Brigitte Quinn: Thank you. If the countryís Revolutionary Guards are overseeing this, what does that say about the leadership in Iran and whoís really holding the cards?

Alireza Jafarzadeh: Well, clearly this recent move gives not only stronger security to the nuclear weapons program of the Iranian regime, but it also means more authority and control for the supreme leader, Ali Khamenei to have a direct control over their nuclear weapons program.

Brigitte Quinn: Is that to say that the more moderate forces would have virtually no power regarding this issue?

Alireza Jafarzadeh: Well, I donít know which moderate forces you are talking about, if you are talking about some voices within the Iranian regime; they were part of this themselves, including Khatami. But itís the Supreme Leader who has the highest authority, who has the final saying and they now have brought their entire nuclear weapons program under the control of a new special military unit they have formed that includes the Revolutionary Guards, the Ministry of Defense and other military institutions. As you suggested earlier it has about 400 nuclear experts under its control. The budget is secret. It is approved by the Supreme Leader through the Supreme National Security Council of the Iranian regime. They have a number of separate facilities and labs very well equipped, well camouflaged. This is separate from the Atomic Energy Organization of the Iranian regime. Because the IAEA has been making trips to Iran to inspect various sites, what they have decided to do is to have this new special unit to bring all their nuclear activities under the control of this military unit and let the Atomic Energy Organization do the more overt, benign-looking activities. And obviously that means the IAEA would have very little control over these operations.

Brigitte Quinn: You answered my next question. It doesnít sound like UN inspections would be really producing anything in the way of good information if thatís the case. Is there anything before I let you go, weíre almost out of time, anything that the US can really do to get more accurate, truthful, if you will, information from Iran?

Alireza Jafarzadeh: I think we need to keep pressing, because it was the pressure that produced something at least so far. I think on the IAEA level, the United States must pursue a zero tolerance policy. No more discrepancies should be tolerated. I think they should have been declared in non-compliance and referred to the UN Security Council. But also on the political side, I think the United States should hit the Iranians where their Achillesí heel is, which is supporting the main Iranian opposition, the anti fundamentalist opposition who are calling for regime change, and I think thatís the only sure way of ending Tehranís nuclear threat.

Brigitte Quinn: Alireza, thank you so much for talking this morning with us, I appreciate it.

Alireza Jafarzadeh: Thank you.
