Iran Sending Suicide Bombers to Iraq

Linda Vester:  There are other information coming in about Iran trying to pull some tricks in Iraq.  Alireza Jafarzadeh is a Fox News foreign affairs analyst. He is the president of Strategic Policy Consulting.  Thank you for joining us.

Alireza Jafarzadeh:  Thank you.

Linda Vester:  Although I wish you came with better news.  You have gotten some information off an Iranian government run website that seems to indicate that Iran is opening flood gates, the borders to suicide bombers to go into Iraq?

Alireza Jafarzadeh:  That’s true Linda, in the past few days a number of websites have been quoting various officials, and figures who are calling to send suicide bombers to Iraq.  In fact one group was supposed to arrive today in Karbala to join what they call the battalion to fight the occupation forces.  And this is not limited to a few rag tag elements.  Some senior officials, for instance Mohtashami who was the head of the so-called “moderate” faction within the parliament until today, one of the close aids of President Khatami, known as the so-called big moderate, he called for opening up the gates and sending suicide bombers to Iraq, and a number of other sites are calling to attack the United States.  I’ll read you one quotation from a top Revolutionary Guard commander who says, and I quote:

“Reconnaissance has been done on 29 weak points in America and the West to prepare attacks on them.  Our plans aim at 6,000 nuclear warheads in America so that they would be blown up.  By doing that we would pass on the information to guerilla groups and take action through them.”

So it’s not just the kind of covert activities, as I talked about before on your show many times that they were doing lots of covert things.  Now, they are doing lots of things openly and publicly, and they are talking about it in their media.

So that tells me clearly that they have entered a new phase; that they are stepping up their activities as we get closer to the June 30th hand over.

Linda Vester: Can I see this for a second?

Alireza Jafarzadeh: Please.

Linda Vester: “Reconnaissance has been done on 29 weak points in America and the West to prepare attacks on them.” Humm! How do we know that it’s not just, I mean it sounds alarming as I look at it, but how do we know that it’s not just a bluster?

Alireza Jafarzadeh: Well, it would be bluster if some individual just came out and said that, but this is done and supported by other elements within the Iranian government.  Second, it is coming from people with tremendous history of attacking the United States.  Iran is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.  They were responsible for blowing up the Marine Barracks in Lebanon in 1983, for the Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia, for the Jewish Community Center bombing in Argentina, and a host of other terrorist attacks. So this isn’t just somebody saying something.  They have an agenda, and by doing that they want to keep the focus on the United States and the situation in Iraq, because they feel this is the time they need to make their move, otherwise they will loose this opportunity.

Linda Vester: And you’ve been telling us for some time that they have had this interest but is it your contention that they are actually paying for it that it is basically money for suicide attackers?

Alireza Jafarzadeh: They are definitely paying for it; they are providing them with ideological incentives, logistics, all of this.  You know they have a very very serious agenda going on regarding Iraq.  They are saying repeatedly the only way to defeat the United States and the occupation in Iraq is through suicide bombings.  So this is serious, this is not just a bluff.  They’re actually sending individuals.  They have said that we have passed the era of press releases and we have entered the phase of operation.

Linda Vester: The operational phase, which is a phrase that makes us all a little bit unnerved. Alireza, thank you very much.

Alireza Jafarzadeh: Thank you.
